Civil Engineering Manager
As the Civil Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the successful delivery of innovative and sustainable civil engineering projects from concept to completion. Your role will require a blend of strong technical expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership skills to ensure our projects meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency.
Responsibilities:
Project Management & Execution
- Lead the entire project lifecycle from conception to completion, including planning,
design, procurement, and handover. - Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality
standards, meeting or exceeding client expectations. - Ensure adherence to all relevant engineering standards, building codes, regulations, and industry best practices.
- Proactively identify and assess potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and
implement measures to minimise hazards and ensure safety. - Implement and maintain rigorous quality control measures throughout the project
lifecycle to ensure high-quality deliverables. - Effectively allocate resources (personnel, materials, equipment) to maximise
efficiency, productivity, and return on investment.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, motivate, and inspire a team of civil engineers, designers, and technical staff.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to team
members to enhance their skills and knowledge. - Conduct regular 1-1s and expedition (performance) reviews, provide constructive
feedback, and set clear expectations for team members. - Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages teamwork, knowledge sharing, and open communication.
- Identify and develop future leaders within the team.
Business Development & Partner Experience
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, understanding their needs and
expectations. - Effectively communicate project progress, address client concerns, and provide
regular updates. Ensure the team is complete partner experience check ins. - Contribute to business development initiatives by identifying new opportunities,
preparing proposals, and participating in industry events. - Build and maintain a strong network of industry contacts, including clients, partners, and suppliers.
- Participate in contract negotiations and ensure that contracts are favourable to the
organisation.
Health, Safety, Environment and Quality
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and relevant ISO standards and ensure project document is retained as per HSEQ Management System.
- Play a key role in developing and delivering systems or project administration training for employees.
- Participate in HSEQ training, report incidents, and support a culture of safety and quality.
- Follow safety rules, identify and address risks, and promote a safe workplace.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, recommending corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
- Proactively identify and assess potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement measures to ensure safety in design and on site.
- Participates in Emergency Preparedness activities e.g. fire evacuations.
Innovation
- Participate in discussions on work system improvements, including leveraging technology for information sharing, management, and quality control.
- Actively engage in reviewing work standards and monitoring processes, initiating recommendations for improvement.
- Assist clients to identify sustainable options and implications.
- Bring ideas forward on how we can improve the way we deliver our partner experience.
Technical
- Prepare and review design documentation including drawings, reports and technical specifications.
- Ensuring civil design work complies with relevant standards.
- Support the development and coordination of the multidisciplinary design packages with BIM or federated model environments.
- Provide engineering input throughout the project lifecycle (planning, feasibility, concept, detailed design etc.).
- Coordinate with various consultants and clients to provide integrated solutions.
- Support internal QA process and mentor junior staff in civil engineering.
- Contribute to fee proposals, scope development, and estimation for civil design packages.
- Understanding of 12D and Civil 3D knowledge is beneficial for guiding designers and drafters.
- Proficient in reviewing client briefs and understanding actual client need (and then delivery on the requirements).
- Perform engineering (calcs / modelling, etc.) and design functions as applicable to a project. This shall include minor drafting functions if appropriate, at least to a concept level.
- Ability to identify, develop options, undertake value management exercises; and present these to Clients.
Experience and Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in Civil Engineering. Strong technical capability in general civil engineering, comprising competency to undertake: Stormwater Drainage Systems, Roads and Pavements, Earthworks and Site Grading, Water and Sewer Infrastructure, Utility Services Coordination, Civil Site Layout Planning and Geometry.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
- Member of Engineers Australia.
- Charted Professional Engineer (CPEng) or Fellow of Engineers Australia.
